With all of the options out there I'm clueless and just wanna start getting my hands dirty and need suggestions for a subwoofer in the $100 and under price range. Obviously I don't need the latest and greatest (at that price), but for my first sub build I'm not ready to tackle that just yet.

What I have:

150 Watt amplifier and subwoofer preamp (I am constructing this myself as well)

Many years of cabinet building experience (CNC, etc), and a full shop to build my enclosure in. I just started at a new cabinet shop so until I am thoroughly trained on this CNC I should just plan to do this all by hand/tablesaw/jigsaw (the old way lol)

Living room is about 12 x 14 feet.

Mainly for Movies and Rock and Funk music.

10"
A nice 10" kit or driver for ~ $100.
Scanspeak Discovery 26W/8534G 10" good in a 127L BR enclosure. This very good low frequency extension driver does 14-26Hz (F-12/3 dB) (ff) in ideal alignment. Works great with small amp (50W).
Peerless SLS 830668 10" Woofer - Coated Paper Cone
PEERLESS SLS10 830668, in a BR enclosure VB = 108 L, FB = 21 Hz. 16-31Hz (F-12/3 dB). Needs a "good" (>100W) amp. for ~max excursion.
Creative Sound Solutions SDX10 Sub Kit - Home Theater Forum and Systems - HomeTheaterShack.com
Just to have an idea of the price and related diy components/work for a complete sub kit.

8"
Another bet (8" drivers are also expensive for a sub with low freq. extension) if you go that route.
Peerless 830869 8" Nomex Cone HDS Woofer 264-1098
This PEERLESS HDS-P830869 works great in ideal (example) VB = 37.3 L, FB = 30.6 Hz for low frequency extension in the 25-46Hz (F-12/3 dB).
Tang Band W8-740P 8" Subwoofer 264-854
