Subwoofer cabinet advice

I have a subwoofer cabinet that I've had for years which I never used due to a change in plans. The cabinet is very sturdily constructed (1.5-inch walls and 2-inch baffle) and has an internal volume of 4.27 cubic feet (121 liters), and doesn't have any opening cut in it but I'm willing to port it if necessary. I've decided to use this cabinet to build the best subwoofer possible for primarily listening to music (90%) and watching some movies (10%), with the only stipulation being that I'm limited to using 12-inch driver(s) due to the placement of the bracing. I would appreciate suggestions that anyone here can provide on driver(s) choice and port configuration for ported subwoofer designs.

Inductor, thanks for the feedback. Do you have any preferences among the items you've listed?

Two more questions:

1) What are the advantages and disadvantages of passivle radiators vs sealed and vented?
2) Would two woofers (10" or 12") be feasible in an enclosure this size, and if so, would it be better to mount them on the same side, or would opposed firing be better?

Inductor 8th March 2013 03:15 AM

If you are looking for hifi, what's generally said is that sealed units respond very well (in the home environment).
In this case no need for a passive that is a form of the vented system. :)

""Would two woofers (10" or 12")...""
What do you mean?
I recommend the TANGBAND WQ-1858
I can look at it if you want...

As you requested I compare 3 of the drivers for a starter.
Explain for the forum what type of setup you have or planning, amps and the like, main speakers...
1. and 3. are aluminum cone, 2 is a paper cone.
Number 2 has a better sensitivity. All in all they are very similar.
TANGBAND WQ-1858, VB = 120.0 L, QTC = 0.648
SB ACOUSTICS SB34NRX75-6, VB = 120.0 L, QTC = 0.738
DAYTON RSS315HFA-8, VB = 120.0 L, QTC = 0.687

Another very nice driver CSS TRIO12

The McCauley 6232 looks very good in a BR box 97-120L and has very nice SPL.
