for my listening room i'm building two matching subwoofer cabinets that can also be used as speaker stands for my NS-1000m speakers.
I need to have my speakers 20" off the floor.

Amplification: yamaha m-4 amplifier
Filter: FMOD (Filter Module) Low Pass RCA Level Crossover (undecided freq)

cabinet size and woofer undecided. i'm wanting recommendations.
i have adequate woodworking skills and all the tools necessary, but don't know much about speaker design.
my room size is 13'x10'x8'

this image i found online i like.. i would like to have my subwoofers look like this. but perhaps instead of a fabric grill, i use a metal mesh one like on my yamaha Ns-1000m speakers.

I would say i could possibly spend up to about $400 on the drivers. but would prefer to spend less. i would be more comfortable with $300 per pair.
but beggars cant be choosers.. i don't know whats available yet.

been looking around on the web.. i'm getting mixed information on these Yamaha NS-1000m's
some saying they go from 40hz-20khz
than viewing frequency responce graphs that clearly show 90hz-20khz..

FMOD is a compromised PLLXO. I'd suggest doing your own. TLS.org | Passive Line-Level Crossover

To use as stands you'll need 2 woofers. I can recommend the ones i choose, CSS SDX10. Get them at the old price while you can. They are going up to $180 (still good value)

Thanks Dave.

that woofer design calls for a 1cuft box. that seems pretty small but i can do a box within a box.

and i will be doing something about the FMOD.
the calculator they offer is a .xls file.. i don't have a application to open that.
and i don't understand the math involved in determining what value components i need to make a crossover. it looks like its just a capacitor and a resistor. want to assist me with the correct values for 40hz lowpass? and should i be useing film capacitors and audio grade resistors?

You can fit it into that small a box, ideal to my mind would be between ~60-130 litres.

The math is just simple arithmetic. No more complex than figuring out how how big to cut the pieces of the box given a target volume.

The spreadsheet opens fine in Open Office/Neo Office.

120 W shouldbe fine, i'm powering mine with 100W (but i have 4 of them -- and a LARGE room)

looks like capacitor value is 1 divided by 2 symbol and pi. than my target frequency.
im confused by the value 2π? when i do the math ignoring the 2π i'm getting 0.025 is that in microfarads?
i failed in math class by the way :D

my amplifiers input impendence is 25k ohms.
and preamplifier output is 2V/600 Ohm

thanks. ok it looks like i will be needing .39uf capacitors.
mouser has this value in polyester film and polypropylene
would polyester be better for audio use?

and i don't understand the resistor value.. is it 10kohm?
(around 5-10 k W should work well with most amps)
assuming that means 10k as in 10,000ohms? and W. means wire wound?

sorry for being a pain

When I used my NS1000M with a 12 on each side below them, I crossed at 100hz. I used a passive line-level crossover, but I had access to large value toroidal inductors that are too expensive today.

Passive may be OK for the high-pass, but it is not acceptable for the low pass (without inductors).

well i decided on the eminence lab12 driver. a sealed box. 1cuft.
my outside dimentions are going to be 13x18x18, all sides will be 1.5" particleboard.
this leaves 15x15x10 internal airspace.. which makes 1.3 cuft.. once i put the driver in it should reduce the .3 remaining airspace and hopefully get me closer to 1cuft.
i had to sandwich pieces of .75" particleboard to reach the 1.5" width.
i also didnt have enough clamps so i had to use a strap to keep the sides tight while drying.. i used liquid nails for the corners of the box.

as of now, the box weighs 45lbs,, the Eminence LAB 12 subwoofer should arrive tomorrow.. it weighs 25lbs.. so my total weight of the subwoofer should be 70lbs.
It will also have a NS-1000 on top which weighs 68lbs. I'm hoping that 138 lbs should be enough to keep it from traveling.
i need a height of 20" and the subwoofer design is only 18"
what would you guys reccomend i use as feet for the subwoofer.

my floor is concrete, with vinyl laminate tile on top.. it does have some give, because there is a layer of plywood between the concrete and tile.
in this situation should i be trying to couple the subwoofer to the floor, or decouple it?

ok the yamaha M-4 power amp does not have enough power to reinforce the bass like i was hoping for.

i need a amplifier or plate amp..
any recommendations?

I know your last post was a couple months ago, but I'm in a similar spot. I'm going to add a, one at a time and maybe one only, 15" sub, home built, to go with my NS-1000Ms. I thought about using my Yamaha CA-2010 integrated amp to power the sub, but felt it wouldn't have enough power. So right now I'm thinking about using the BASH 500 from Oaudio O Audio - 500W BASH Subwoofer Amplifier Last time I looked it was selling for 219.95 plus power cord plus shipping. No price on their site currently. Parts Express also has a version of the BASH 500 but it doesn't have the parametric EQ, and sells for 249. PE has lots of plate amps, and rack mount units if you'd rather go that direction. Hope this helps. Jim
