Bass for my soldier

Hi Nathenry,

Getting the vented woofer to sound right with the horn midrange may take some playing with the levels and the cross-overs. Maybe epa has some ideas.

Also, you could run an impedance curve on the subwoofer, this would tell you if the tuning is correct, and if there are any additional air leaks.

Regards,

hi nathenry.
i think you should have 2 subs to get level with the mid,so you could ease it down >
mid -4db,high -10 db or so
dont know if there is any damping in the box,you could take some out,to try.

oliver sugestion is a good ideer.
factory ts parameters could differ a lot from the real thing, result could be a tunning of +-5 hz or so.

ok I will give it a try and yes the bass box have ployfill in it.

Epa
I was fooling a around the system today and connect a preamp before the dcx2496 and it make the system sound rich.So is it a good thing to put a preamp before the dcx2496.

Next i want to try my old sound processors to hear if the system sound better with them or the dcx2496.

setup

eq
preamp
maximizer
compressor
crossover.

which is correct eq to preamp or preamp to eq.

hi nathenry.
the device sequense doesnt matter, only the compressor/limiter must be the last device in the chain.
the dcx2496 "quality"is the options in the device, not in the sound.
'watever floats your boat 'to make it sound "right" is ok.
(heard that saying on tv😀)

edit/correction .in your case x-over is the last in the chain.

listening and experimenting

Epa how would damping affect the midhigh. In other words is it a good idea to put stuffing in the midhigh.

Sound processing

Adding the preamp before the dcx make the system nosy .
What can I do to make the dcx sound lively.do you think I should replace the preamp with a equalizer or a maximazer to help the dcx sound lively.

wouldn't hurt to tr damping but it should not make much difference.
the dcx has multiple eq functions onboard, putting an other one in front of it would be double creating more hiss.
the nosy sound might come from the hf driver wich is normal.
use the eq to take that out.
sound enhancers /exiters attenuate harmonics ,wich make it sound richer.
you can play with that without problems.
grtz erik

btw did you setup the phase/delay explained here?
you could play a frequenty sweep to identify phase problems.

Should I put the sound enhancer before the dcx or after

Yes you are right the hiss sound is coming from the hf driver.

ok i am finish experimenting and i can honestly say that this system rocks. The midhorn is clean and the bass is smooth and deep.

If anyone looking to build a bass cabinet and a midhorn go with Epa midhorn design and Tb46 br design they rock.

a th would be a nice wow factor for this speaker.

Hi Nathenry,

I have to start by saying it's not "...my tapped horn...". It is just that my main interest here on diyaudio has been Tom Danley's tapped horn, and the use of Hornresp and AkAbak to simulate boxes of similar nature.

There is a link to a design I like in Post #36 (this thread), and there has been a lot of work on the general subject of tapped horns and 18" drivers here at diyaudio. A very, very good thread is this one: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/subwoofers/190635-th-18-flat-35hz-xoc1s-design.html ; this thread contains a wealth of information on bracing, grills, general construction (e.g.😛ost #1/6) and throat treatment (e.g.: Post #571).

Before you get too deep into this: what is the maximum size you can live with (the lower you want to go, the bigger the box, and generally these boxes are big), how often do you have to move the box, what is your low end demand (actually, not some general idea of what might be nice), and the same for SPL, do you need an extended upper frequency band (e.g.: out to 200 Hz)? Without clear answers to questions like this you won't get there from here. That having been said, the "TH-18 Flat to 35hz!(Xoc1's design)" is a very good starting point. For another very well designed box see this thread: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/subwoofers/170771-single-sheet-th-challenge.html . Jbell's SS15 is a very nice, portable TH which can be adapted to fit a 18" driver, again, as it is smaller it will not have the low end extension of Xoc1's designs.

Anyway, hope the above will get you and your team started, you already have a great driver at hand.

Regards,
