Default My next subwoofer project, opinions needed!

Hey guys.

I'm in the process of deciding what I want to do for my next subwoofer project.
I have some space to work with now that I've mostly completed my media room. I've got about 14' x 18' of room to work with.

I've built out one of the walls away from the concrete foundation because I've been contemplating an infinite baffle array with a pair of Fi IB3 18's. I've ordered the amplifier that I plan to drive them with (a Behringer EP2000) and now that I'm to the point where I want to pull the trigger on a couple of drivers, I'm not sure.

The IB318's mounted in infinite baffle would be cool, however my last subwoofer project was a couple of T-TQWT using some old Peerless 831759 and I love them.

My question is this. Do you guys think that a pair of Fi IB318 drivers mounted in infinite baffle would outperform something like, a pair of TC Sounds Epic 12" in a T-TQWT?

Size and WAF are not an issue.

OutPerform in what way? The IB option would generally have better SQ but the T-TQWT would generally be louder. What are your preferences?

Hm, outperform, I guess I mean output, but I hadn't really considered that one might just simply sound better than the other.

The other facet of this issue is a nasty bass cancellation that this room has which I've been able to finagle by moving my t-tqwt subs closer to the listening position, where the IB drivers would be mounted in the wall and that's where they'd have to stay.

I guess in the end, my order of importance is like this:

1.) Low frequency extension. (20 cycles give or take a couple.)
2.) Cleanliness / low distortion.
3.) Lots of output.

I am open to other suggestions besides the two I mentioned. I'm looking to spend somewhere around $200-250 for each driver. Really, I'd build anything, even something like a DTS-10 if I could get the drivers for the right price. SDX10s, TC Sounds, Lab12's....I'm open to anything.

Hi DrDyna,

Petter Persson's Kraken 212 seems to fit the bill (and save you money). Build one (or two), and use your T-TQWTs with the Kraken(s) in the Geddes multiple sub approach (to equalize the room response). All well tested, and well documented here on diyaudio. :-)

Regards,

Nice, 135 db @ 20 cycles, that's pretty impressive. I'll have to read through this thread, I hadn't seen it before.

Thanks for pointing it out!

Awesome B.

So, if I place them near to each other, the Kraken should be polarity inverted?

I have my T-TQWT placed closer (and a little behind) the listening area right now because when it's placed at the front of the room, I get a nasty cancellation right around the center of the room which is just large enough to envelop the couch. I figured I needed either a larger tv (so I could move the couch farther back and out of the null) some bass traps at the rear wall, or just move the subs into the null area, which seems to have worked well. It does cause some directionality, it's pretty easy to hear that the subs are close by, so for now I've simply got their level turned down a little.

The position I was thinking for the Krakens would be left and right flat against the walls with the mouth section facing out (the latest image of the Kraken in that thread has the mouth open at the end of the line instead of at the side of the end like a dts-10)

I was thinking that the Kraken might help the room null because it sits pretty far out into the room (the mouth would almost be 15-20% out from the front wall), but I haven't had a chance to build a TH yet so I'm not sure how they behave as far as positioning is concerned.

No doubt though, that this would cause some time alignment issues and I would have to rethink the positioning of the Peerless T-TQWT again.

I'm still considering the IB318s though, the IB alignment looks very nice. Perhaps not as powerful as the TH, but that's the beauty of the IB is...if you want more, you just start sawing more holes in the wall and stick in more drivers!

Thanks very much B, I'll be studying those images carefully.
