TH-18 Flat to 35hz! (Xoc1's design)

Did some measurements today and wanted to share. Comments are welcome.

I was hoping to get to use my new SPL meter as input to REW but the results were so inconsistent that I went back to DBX M2.

Using REW
Setup was 28.5v measured with voltmeter at 50hz
Distance 10 meters and approx. 70cm from the ground
Highpass 30hz/48db
Lowpass 110hz/48db

Interesting results.

Are you able to do an impedance curve measurement? That will quickly tell how close you got to the sim of the TH18, and if there are any glaring issues with the build. The FR curve looks pretty decent - can you repeat the measurement @ 2.83V, with the mic placed 1M from the subwoofer's mouth?

Hello everyone!

I'm new here but very interested in this topic... I don't know much about this design. What I've read has me really interested in building 12 of them. I'm in Miami, Fl where street dj'ing is very competitive! There are many guys using Vega FH diet as well as Yorkvillle LS 1208 diet designs.

I'm hoping these will be all I've heard about.

Quick question... Is the 18 sound woofer the ideal sub for this design? I've seen other places RCF or B&C woofers are the right choice.

Thanks for any assistance in advance!

If you plan to use 12 at the same time I'd say go for horns or bph, they REALLY pay of in stacks of 6:)
This will give you extended range and probably better sensivity & a more flat response.

I think this design is mostly used for b&c, check thru the topic, I think the guy who started it wanted to use 18sound, I also think he compared to b&c.

NOTE MY POSTS / QUESTIONS about version 2, like the jbell there seems to be a better version with some cone correction & extended path.

compare to keystone, tham18, cbe...

WHAAAT! Post some links! I didn't know that it was going down in Miami.
You can't do that on the US west coast, they're all paranoid, you can't throw a party in the street, be intoxicated, be naked, not even walk barefooted or without shirt in the shops, they're extremist Muslim / Cristian or something (forgot the difference, both is something with an evil god).

How about permissions & neighborcomplaints?
I have 24 bph, 12 hybrid subs, 16 tms-2s, 6 tse-111
I'll book a container right away! -See you in a month:)

The picture at that link doesn't look anything like what they described.

A better picture is available here - Yorkville

There's a response curve for the LS1208 at BFM's site - see Titan 48 SPL Charts/Comparisons - BillFitzmaurice.info .

if that response curve is correct, the LS1208 is going to be 5dB louder than the TH18 for most of its passband, but it's not going to reach down as low.

Yeah, weird pic on the spec sheet. I agree IF the curve is correct but since I can't readily find that curve, I think it is suspect. There are some good posts over LAB and the LS1208 is held in good regard, so I don't think the data is all marketing BS. Last post: Should I change to LABs?(97db 37Hz) I didn't realize this until now, but the the LS1208 is LARGER than a LAB...

I guess it's up to JMD to build the XOC1 and shoot it out against the LS1208. Or maybe time to talk OTHORN. :D

Bring your bullet proof vest, too - I'll bet you a stack of labhorns that the neighborhood where they play speakers that loud in the streets isn't as safe as the one where they call the cops on you before you even get the last speaker cable plugged in!

It's not the best neighborhoods... but they aren't that bad either! I can't remember the last time anything happened at these events. You get as many as 10 groups sometimes... There are some guys with some big systems down here. Have seen as many as 64 Vega's set up by one group.

I will add some pics a little later... on a very old and slow laptop at the moment.

If the LS1208 is actually capable of 97dB@37 Hz, then the output there is basically a match for the TH18, or close enough. Note however that the LS1208 is quite a bit larger in overall volume.

Given the choice of between an LS1208 and a LAB, I'd probably go with the LS1208. The LAB is a good design, but it does have its flaws (chamber size is not correct = hump and peak at lower frequencies, then there's the issue of heat buildup in the small chamber).

The LS1208 design is over a decade old, but it still holds up, and the price is pretty good as well. Being a FLH design however, its FR is pretty dependent on how many you use in a stack (BTW, given the 6~10dB change in efficiency across the passband of a typical FLH, it's not surprising that they're known for their "punchy" sound), and seeing that the driver's magnet is enclosed in a small sealed chamber, there's also the question of heat buildup and the impact on its response.

For a TH like the TH18, the FR is less dependent on how many are stacked, and heat buildup is a lot less of an issue (as can be expected, with the driver's *** hanging out in the mouth of the horn, LOL).

Note: based on the sims I've seen, Art's "Keystone" TH design goes a good way towards closing the efficiency gap, at the expense of a minor increase in Fb. It may be worth consideration.

Miami street dj's pics

Here are the pics I promised of local Miami street dj's. You have everything from JBL 4560's to Yorkville LS1208's to 21" Vega style cabs.

That is definitely a bunch of piles of speakers. How does everything sound when stacked horizontally like that?

Most of those guys sound really good! You get some cancelation from how they stack the Vega's... but you can't stand in front of most of them. The guys with the all white are playing 24 hog scoops... they're playing Powersoft K'10's... They sound unbelievable! You definitely can't stand in front of those guys wall. I want something different... that's why I'm looking at the TH 18.

I wondered the same, today I play with Killasan that set up in the same way:
https://www.facebook.com/events/1718193998408356/

I set mine up tilted & splayed, point source.

@JMD161: WHY TH18? They're not that different from HOG scoops, which are a kind of tapped horn too.

For a setup like that I'd certainly suggest some front loaded horns, but they're hard to build, check super basshorn & Invader bin.
