Default Newbie needing help on small sub

Ok all you experts can you help a newbie out? I am in bad need of so bass for my HT/Audio set up. I am planning on adding two of Jim Holtz's Statement Monitors so my current speaker set up is of little value. I am an experienced woodworker and have a full woodshop so construction will be of no problem.

I have looked at the Tapped horn 25Hz design and thinking it just might be to tall. Can it be set on its back firing upwards? Will this effect the sound quality? I have also been looking for a ported or 4th order box for a 10" Sub. Can anyone recommend a Speaker to use in the sub $200.00 range and a design?

Thanks

Chuck

Peerless do some good stuff. There's a lot of woofer+PR (passive radiator) designs for those, reports are good, though I've never heard one myself.

Tapped horns are a good way of getting lots of bass from a relatively small driver. However, the cabinets tend to be large, so several larger woofers in a more conventional cabinet may be more impressive (in terms of the visual effect). It's personal preference: I don't mind huge boxes, but drivers are expensive to ship over here, so I bought a pair of the Tang Band 6.5" subs, and built a pair of (25Hz) tapped horns. They're very good, go nice and low and I haven't managed to get any nasty sounds of them yet (ie, speaker hitting mechanical limits)

Hopefully, this website will load for you (it's not loading for me atm): it'll give you some background info on different cabinet types.
