the PD2450 is optimized for mid class chamber sizes. If you have chamber space available enough, the PD2150 or even the cheap PD186 (more pcs) are clearly to prefer - see photos of two projects from me by post #12 about

No matter what size the diaphram is these woofers can't get around the problem of needing raw cabinet volume for efficiency at very low frequencies. They don't get around the problem of resonant frequency having a strong effect on efficiency either. The cost of these rarities makes the maximum usual coil diamter of 4" and the cone diameter of 18" pretty attractive. After all you may easily end up with lower harmonic distortion with multiple smaller drivers. In other words, huge drivers don't mean ultra-low bass. Only power and cabinet size will get you that, necessarily.

Of course the common "cheat" is excursion capacity, allowing you to get more out of a single driver:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=293-666

But, this doesn't get around the power and Fs problem at all.

Theoretically you could put nothing in your enclosure, as in vacuum. Nothing means nothing, so there would be no limit to how small you could make the box, assuming your driver could fit in it. You'd have to come up with a spring that had very linear force over the excursion range, except for the rate required to tune the resonant system. This spring would have to exert almost two tons of offset force for an 18" cone and have very low loss and high life. Of course your cone would have to be not much heavier than a usual cone in order to be as efficient, yet be able to withstand the developed force of the 15 pound constant pressure differential.

In other words, plan for a very large air filled box if you want infrasonic bass.

Yeah who knows if that's the truth, and for how long anyway. The thing is at some point you will be trading off between suspension nonlinearity and cone nonlinearity. TC sounds says the suspension is linear, but any roll profile with long straight sides is going to flex under drive. The total flexure over the whole surround surface might give a fairly linear response, but it's definitely all loss. Presumably some of these super sub manufacturers have thought about it longer and more closely than I have. The tape wire and stainless former seem like great ideas, because it's definitely going to take Power to drive that thing to xmax.

WiSounds wants 140dB's @ 20hz out of the the TC Sounds Pro 5100 18" Neo Subwoofer Driver.

In real life I hate such speakers and therefore I prefer speakers/transducers, that have perfect quality and that are produces in a great amount over a long time. The brand "Precision Devices" is my favorite brand.
