is lab horn the best

Is there any bass horn out there better than the lab horn

CLS 28th January 2010 08:40 AM

As always.

Define 'better' ;)

plays louder and goes deeper

OK, then, I believe there're already some, here in this forum :D

I also believe you'll find them without much effort.

How many are you interested in using? From what I recall, they hit their mark when you have 8 of them in the pile. Physics is unforgiving.

Then again, one huge monster of great efficiency might be Pe bound compared a group of smaller subs in a pile that end-up being smaller as a total, but who's output capabilities are much greater.

Be aware that below the cuttoff of the horn, all you have is just a sealed box.

So.... what is the total output you are targeting with what roll-off character?

Hi,
download Danley's paper on designing the Labhorn.

It is very illuminating and in particular Danley compares the Labhorns to an "ideal" vented stack. The vented stack loses out on cost and loses out on power requirement and loses out on size (volume) and loses out on weight. Is that enough?

The Labhorn approaches 50% efficiency and there is little that can be done to improve on that.

12 Labhorns are needed for freespace hanging, or 6, if up against one solid boundary.

If you want to go lower than the 27Hz of the Labhorn, then the horn is going to grow much bigger. How can it be transported? Which driver will have been designed for the new deeper horn? What instruments do you intend reproducing on this new deeper horn?

So is there any bass horn that can go up against the lab horn. Box per box

soundhead 28th January 2010 10:57 AM

How about 215 or 218 in a bass horn bigger than the lab horn size no problem

Requirements are everything heres the lab12 up against the Bill Fitzmaurice Tuba Home theatre both corner loaded. The lab gets higher spl from a single cab but the tuba goes a lot lower.

You cant do wront with the LAB, as they are still a great design compared to about 99% of whats out there. Maybe you could get a better performance with the new danley sound labs tapped horns, but it wont be much of a difference i think and you dont have the bonus of having a professionally designed horn to build. Designing your own opens up lots of possibilities to screw up.
