I don't think the superposition theorem works for Qts
You'll end up with the worst of all possible worlds - smeared bass.
I'd put them both in the same box, sealed, as big as you can make it fit. Drive them from a beefy stereo amp and tie the amp inputs together. Feed it from a subwoofer output.

whats the best way to get decent punch in the bass aswell as low end?
I think the "punch" you're talking about may be found in the midbass, moreso than the subbass.
Good sound deadening, sealing up door panels and having enough power on the midbasses are all part of that. I've heard 6.5"s that kick you in the chest with midbass, although there's more install work than simply dropping them in stock locations.
