Default Mini MatterHorn?

After seeing the video about tom danley's giant tapped horn i was wondering if something scaled down could be built.

Im thinking a cab about 400mm x 600mm instead of a shipping container size, but with multiple mini subwoofers like the tang band ones. and aim for an f3 of 40-45hz?

I been testing my unity horn project today, tweeking the mid section (4x 75mm) and was thinking multiple small drivers in a tapped horn could be fun.

anyone got any suggestions on the subject? benefits are that each woofer could be run with a sure-electronics tripath amplifier kit.

Multiple small drivers in a tapped horn works very well. I have used and recommend the Tang Band W6-1139 6-inch subwoofers - they work very well.

Why stop at 45 Hz? The 6-inch tang band W6-1139 will play considerably lower than that. 25 Hz is not out of reach with these drivers.

How many drivers were you planning to use? A modestly-sized TH (approx 2m X 0.5 m X 0.25 m) with 4 W6-1139s can literally shake a house, blur one's vision, and take one's breath away. Used indoors in a typical room, 8 would be overkill, 16 would border on scary.

Unfortunately, I only have 10 more of these little drivers to play with ....

I posted a bunch of stuff about the TH I built with 4 W6-1139s over in the collaborative thread, starts on page 120, post #2982.

The results with that one were really good, even though it was a compromised box (limited space for it to fit into). With a bit more length and more mouth area, I could probably get another 3dB of efficiency and another 5 Hz of extension.

When I compared the in-room responses of the old sub and the TH, I found similar responses from 45 to about 90 Hz for both, but the 4 TB's made about 20 dB more at 20 Hz than the 12" they replaced. Admittedly, I used about 30% to 40% more box volume to get there, but the new box hides better due to the shape. That's measured with a 12 dB highpass at 30 Hz on the TB's. Room modes certainly had effects (some good, some bad), but ultimately, we listen to subs and speakers in the room.

Seriously - the design really depends on the application. I would not hesitate to use these drivers in a car stereo or home theater environment. Not sure about pro-sound - that is an area I am not that familiar with. They really are a small driver

For starters - an 8 driver cabinet is pretty easy - just double what I did, but read about all I'd do differently first....

Just having a bit of a play with 16 drivers shows that they want about 900 liters internally, and will get below 25 Hz with no excursion problems under a kilowatt or so.

That's WAY too big for my house, so it's nothing I'm planning to build.
