Sonotube transmission line sub with Dayton RS driver
I'd like to build a transmission line subwoofer to go with my IMF TLS50 t-line floorstanders. I have a 9 foot ceiling so I can easily get away with standing an 8 foot tube in a corner. I even have the corner picked out. The Dayton Reference Series drivers are getting a lot of positive acclaim and for good reason - I just put a pair of 8" RS woofers in the IMFs and the sound is fantastic. I've read similar things about the sub drivers.
In this project( http://www.t-linespeakers.org/projects/nick/index.html) an Adire Audio Shiva is used, but Shivas are no longer available. Another Dayton driver, the 12" DVC has the same Qts(0.38) and Xmax(15.1mm) too, so it seems very similar to the Shiva. I know this would work, but if possible I want to use the RS woofer as I am chasing bass definition, not sheer volume. Also the RS has a rubber surround vs the DVC's foam.
So I guess my question is, what makes a driver suitable for use in a t-line? I just want to know so I can determine if this is a good driver choice. I am given to understand that ideally there should be a medium Q and the line cross section should be about 100-125% of the driver's Sd. I am unsure about whether Vas should be high or low for a T line. So I could use a 10" driver in a 12" tube which would give me 120% of the Sd, or a 12" driver in the same diameter for only 100% Sd. The 10" driver has a Qts of 0.44 and the 12" has 0.49. Which is a better choice? I am mainly looking to reinforce the 30-50 hz range but with clarity and definition. Any response below that is just a bonus.
