Hi, I am wanting to build a subwoofer of my own. Can someone tell me what the difference is between a subwoofer that is used in a car vs. one that is used in a HT system? I have been to Parts-Express and Rythmik Audio and am still have no idea what the difference is.
Thanks |

Generally a car sub will not need to go as deep as the cars cabin will provide some natural boost to the output at lower frequencies. Also a car sub will usually need to be smaller than one for a home, so the drivers are designed to suit that application which requires more power.
If you choose wisely you can use a driver marketed for cars, in the home.

As a newbie to this board and still quite ignorant about some things Hi-Fi, I understand the difference this way. SubWoofers are more about Home Theatre technically as they focus on frequeicies below 100hz and are usually crossed over lower than that. Sub frequencies are not as much about music as they are about reproducing large sounds found in movies. A 6.5" subwoofer will go lower and need to be crossed over lower than a 15" woofer which can sometimes be crossed over as high as 300hz or higher.
A subwoofer can be located away from the mains if it is crossed over low enough. It doesn't need to be tuned as low though for music. Most car stuff is about SPL and small enclosures. |

HT subs are designed for the low rumbly stuff in films
Music subs are designed to be more musical, with tuneful bass, Car subs are designed to use to gain of a car's cabin to its advanatge. 9 times out of 10, a car sub will be a sealed box, with a long-throw driver and a huge amp to power it with.
