I'm interested in what users of this forum would considerable desirable for a subwoofer module (ie custom subwoofer, amplifier, enclosure, etc) around the $1000 price point.
Things to reflect upon: Would you be interested in a completed subwoofer module around the $1000 price point? How large would you (or your significant other) tolerate? What enclosure shape would you desire, ie cube, cylinder, etc? How much power would you want and in turn power handling of the subwoofer? How large of a subwoofer driver? How large of Voice Coil? What do you think needs to be improved in current subwoofer offerings? Transfer function? Ported, Sealed? Continuous output capability, transient output capability? What signal processing features? etc. Thanks, Thadman

How large would you (or your significant other) tolerate?
For home use, 50x50x50cm What enclosure shape would you desire, ie cube, cylinder, etc? cube is fine How much power would you want and in turn power handling of the subwoofer? Well, 120dB/1w/1m@20 Hz would be nice How large of a subwoofer driver? doesnīt matter, as long as it does the job How large of Voice Coil? Se above.. VC diameter is not much of a "power factor"... What do you think needs to be improved in current subwoofer offerings? Hard to say, there are so many variations... IMHO precision is the less improved, most marketing people seem to focus on watts, then hz (trasnfer function) oder driver size... Transfer function? 20-200 Hz Ported, Sealed? Donīt care, as long as itīs done well. Chubby, growling ports is nothing I want to hear in a ported box Continuous output capability, transient output capability? Thatīs not important, itīs what marekting will put on the box.. If it does 120dB@20Hz with lower than 5% THD, Iīm satisfied What signal processing features? Here is the part where it gets interesting.... The upper features are not so hard to achieve and itīs not really new.... Nice would be a room correction, that really works and is done with a lot of brains. Amping of course should be class-D with power factor correction and all the filtering should be done via FIR-Filters.... ok, not sooo difficult, but here it comes: If the DSP would be run by open source software (e.g. Brute FIR) and if a SDK would be available... that would just make my day, Iīd even spend more money |

Hi there!
What do you want in a subwoofer module? Post #1 I'm interested in what users of this forum would considerable desirable for a subwoofer module (ie custom subwoofer, amplifier, enclosure, etc) around the $1000 price point. Things to reflect upon: Would you be interested in a completed subwoofer module around the $1000 price point? Yes How large would you (or your significant other) tolerate? Up to as big as a wardrobe What enclosure shape would you desire, ie cube, cylinder, etc? Cylinder is the best, but there arent many options. I decide as I go along. How much power would you want and in turn power handling of the subwoofer? 500W is always enough I need a flat frequency response at at least 100db. How large of a subwoofer driver? 15" no more no less (for music) How large of Voice Coil? I use 100mm What do you think needs to be improved in current subwoofer offerings? The damping of the enclosure (and the price compared to DIY) Ported, Sealed? You kiddin me? Horns are the best. If not possibloe, I take transmissionline or Dipole but I will never use boxes again. Continuous output capability, transient output capability? whatever What signal processing features? Nice Tube Amp, and of course bass traps all over the room (especially the corners) etc. Thanks, Thadman |
