OK, this is me bored and day dreaming. But, has there ever been a sub driver with multiple voice coils? I dont mean a DVC motor, but a driver with multple motors, lite 3 or 4 one on each edge to control movement, or a driver with a motor and voie coil on either side of the cone to control distortion and movement to lower distortion?
I believe that Philips has a patent on a multiple voice coil speaker. It was designed to serve as a physical embodiment of a DAC. That's right, a digital direct drive loudspeaker! However, I would imagine that for them, getting the voice coils to overlap as closely as possible was a design goal (e.g. to minimize non-linearities in the drive system).
Do you mean something like this http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48223
Works very well, lowers distortion, lowers inductance, and due to it's nature helps prevent overhang/overextension due to the electromagnetic braking force that comes as a result of the design.
Patent was done in 97-98 http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/5748760/description.html
