just wanted to ask you guys, what happend to my subs, i recently bought an RE12 subs, then i connected it to my amp. after a few minutes of playing, the subwoofer smelled like a burned plastic. what happend?? is it possible that the subs cannot handle the watts given out by the amp? the subs has a 250watts peak, and my amp is rated 4000watts bridgeable.

Sounds like you blew the sub, probably playing loud eh? 250 watts peak, is more like 50WRMS for practical purposes, especially given specification conventions in 'affordable' woofers.

Once it has cooled, place you fingers around the dust cap of the woofer and move it inward. Hear a rubbing or scraping? She's got a fried coil, end of game. You played too hard.

In a good case scenario, you just burnt of some of the glue/laquer on the VC. This can happen too some drivers and is usually not decrading performance (as long as it only occurs a single time). The bad case scenario is just as listed above.
