Default Dayton Reference suitability...

Is the Dayton Reference HF 12" 4ohm subwoofer driver suitable for a downward firing configuration in a sealed box?

How much Xmax would I lose?

I have just about settled on this particular driver for my DIY sub.

Thanks in advance.

Hey there. I don't think the Dayton Ref. HF driver is good for down firing. You can use this here to find out for yourself:

I do not recommend downfiring for a high quality woofer like the RS315HF. Downfiring adds a bias to the suspension which will add to distortion. It is very importance that BL, Kms, and Le are as symmetric as possible.

Plus, who doesn't like to see their woofers hit the low notes.

If the driver already puts out significant high order distortion, downfiring might help mitigate that.

Thank you for the replys. I will use the driver in a front facing design for the forementioned, recommended reasons. BTW, my calculations for a downfiring situation came out to about 3.5% sag (a little under 1/2mm) for the mentioned Dayton HF.
