First subwoofer- advice needed please :)

hi, this is my first subwoofer project, mainly using it for listening to music. also i am on a limited budget being a student and all
i have looked at various subs and amps-
was thinking maybe this one:

i cant get a direct link for some reason, but its on this website:

1. Will this be enough power?- i dont need anything crazy
2. do i have to get a sub with the same impedance as the amp?- i guess its 4 ohms with this one?

also is this sub a gd choice/ and will work well with the amp?: Dayton QT305-4 12" Quatro Subwoofer 4 Ohm

I agree with your purposal, from what I can see.
Then I would go out to think why would you ask for a driver from one continent and a subamp from another?
So, if you want more value for the money, go with PE (lower taxes/more for customs). To go with your (www.lautsprechershop.de) european main speaker chain distribution link look at this one other sub:

It seems to make good/quality pairs (driver/box) of vented subs, closed subs and dipoles or a better music partner.
(The other is to have a distributor for both from UK.)

thx for the reply, yea ive looked into getting the sub of that same website now, i looked at the one you recommended and it looks gd, although looking further i found these two, just coz there a bit cheeper are they any good?:

Good quality amps and British built.

While I'm sure the drivers are quality, what are the shipping costs? It could become quite prohibitive when factored in.

You can usually find the Peerless XLS10 for ~£70 on ebay (delivered) and a wealth of information on the driver available on the 'net.

Just my opinion for ease. Good luck!

thx for all ur advice, funny you should say that steve i found that sub on ebay a few days ago i saw it was 8ohms tho- not knowing much about this i have another question, is 4 ohms much better than 8 ohms?, ofc i would have to match it to the amp. i have noticed the equipment comes in each choise but is the same price so i was a bit confused.

ive kind of narrowed it down to 2 choices:

Peerless XLS10 from ebay

or

For a short connection between them (like in a car or inside the speaker) a 4 Ohm is fine. For a long connection between let's say an amp and a speaker on a stage (example) high is better because the cables are long and have very high resistance in low ohmage.

IMO the 4 ohm amp matched to the 8 ohm driver is fine. A lower amp rating is preferable as you can then always upgrade the driver at a later date. Although it gives less watts on paper it should be fine in reality. An 8 ohm amp will not like a 4 ohm driver, but the other way around is no real problem

I can't comment on either of the drivers you've suggested nor the XLS 10 as I've not listened to them. Google should give a few ideas on the suggested units, but the XLS 10 has a decent reputation. It's close to twice the price of the other drivers you've looked at from our European friends though. Plenty of research will yield various opinions. Match you preferences to them if possible.

Bear in mind that the distance between the amp and driver in an integrated unit is minimal. The amp will help to integrate with your main speakers with it's controls. Have you already got them, or are they a future decision?

basicaly, its my understanding that:
a 100w 8ohm amp will give a 8ohm sub 100w
a 100w 4 ohm amp will give a 8ohm sub less than 100w

is this correct?

yes steve, the main speakers are a future project, but i will use it with my existing speakers for now, ill prob start everything in like a month or so when i have been paid and finished my exams :S

i will however (i think ) buy that peerless sub on ebay as it wont be there forever i think it will be better because there seems to be lots of plans for these.

Yes. Using an 8 ohm driver will produce less volume.

Only a 3 dB drop though, hardly worth losing sleep over. If 3 dB makes a difference you may wish to re-evaluate your choice of amp and driver.
