Default Using a Sub for a Woofer

Hello,

I am not schooled in the Sub Woofer and car Audio arena.

I am not really schooled stereo wise since the late 80's.

I have had with me the last 20 years a pair of Cerwin Vega S-2EE's I bought in 1987. They were very expensive speakers back then Approx $550.00 each buying them overseas while in the military.

I am now trying to fix things on them that have either been broken or deteriorated.

The woofer Cones are dead. I bought what I thought was a 15" Woofer but turns out it is a CV Quake 15Sub.

I put it in the box and it works but not very hard. It seems the tweeter is over shadowing it. I at this point am assuming I might need for it to be powered or the crossovers may need to be tweeked but have no Idea. I like the sub's looks but am thinking I may need to break down and recone my old woofers.

If I Recone myself do I need special equipment or can it bedone without?

Thank you for your help.

Buddy

Default I'll answer Bud

Hello,

Are these speakers worth repairing from a "They're bloody good speakers" point of view?
More info is needed and maybe this should have gone in the Loudspeakers forum. Sometimes, I you need to decide whether they should be sent to hifi heaven, or restored. Exotic, Limited Edition, Classics etc need restoration Sony Technics Pioneer maybe not.
The cost could outway a decent new speaker. Your fellow forum members here, if asked will help you build from scratch, from a sheet of mdf right through to a laquered finnish, from Thiele/Small to a accurate set of cutting lists and drawings, computer simulations with software you could buy or download for free.

Even still, these were bought in certain circumstances and are probably sentimental. Maybe you need to search for info on CerwinVega spares, checking Ebay etc see if parts can be sourced.

Maybe the above can help? Goodluck

Default Woofer Help

These are Kinda sentimental but they were not sold or marketed in the US as far as I know. I believe they were only made available to the military stores overseas so perhaps they would be considered limited edition/Classic. They were one of Cerwin Vegas first Digital speakers, it has 2 tweeters one in front and one in rear, a 6.5 Mid and the 15' woofer. Supposedly according to CV you could power them with a 1 watt portable radio. All that aside they are (from my ears standpoint) one of the best sounding speakers I have ever heard. Great hard Undistorted Bass and Trebble. Placed in a room correctly you would think you were by the stage. You could not tell the music was coming from a box at all.

I am looking on Ebay and trying to get stock woofers but really liked the design of the Quake sub and was toying with getting a second to match. If it will not work out though I guess I need to wait till the right woofer hits ebay for a price I can afford.

I choose Subwoofers as a posting point because of wanting to use the sub as a woofer hoping someone would know if It could be done without a lott of fuss.

Thank You.

Buddy.

Sub drivers are fore subs only, and to be honest you cannot just change to any different woofer, or else it wouldnt be too hard to make any speaker work

It should not be too expencive to have your woofers reconed, but the problem might be the surround which I think might be special on CV

The subs may, and probably do, have a lower sensitivity than the original woofers - and on top of that wont play the higher frequencies very well in general - so it's likely to sound very biased towards treble.

To get something closer to the original, you ought to look for something as close to the original woofer as possible - same impedance and sensitivity at a minimum.

Default Active ly thinking

Hi Bud,

The tweeters and mids are important, more so than the bass, sometimes!
I could be way of the mark, but from the way I see it, if the tweeters and the 6 mid units are functioning alright on your main system, I'd guess you could get away with putting the woofers on an active crossover system. I'd be inclined to seek the T/S on the 6", guys like richie00boy on here can help with that, get the T/S for the woofer. I reckon the frequency response of those Quake woofers will get all the way up to those 6's. This way a 2way active crossover will help, your main amp drives the mid/top and get a second amp, to run the subs. Of course then, not only can you dial in a crossover frequency, you can adjust gain too. I bet overall they'd sound as good, if not better.

Find the volume of the inside of the box and find out if its suited to the Quake driver.

Cheers
Mike

Thank you, you have all answered my question in detail. I will need to get the original Woofers or as close to it as possible. I like the Idea of making the Quake work but That would call for more than I am prepared to invest at the moment. They have sat for 10 years and can sit another ten if need be. Of course they probably need speakers at all by then.....
