I am planning to experiment a bit with PLLXO for a subwoofer that will be running from 40Hz on down. I will probably try 2nd order 1st.
It occurs to me that it might be advantageous to use the phono input on the amplifier that will be powering the sub. My thought is that the several dB per octave slope in this region could help partially compensate for the roll off of the subwoofer and the extra gain of the MM phono stage could help with losses in the passive filter. If the gain is too high I could always pad it down. Another advantage is that the low pass above the 40Hz cut off would be of slightly higher order than if I used the regular aux inputs. Any reason that I should not try this? I realize that there may be a sub 20Hz high pass in there too but that might not be all bad. mike |
