I constructed my SW two years ago, using Patman's SunoSubII design, powered with a 250-watt Parts Express subwoofer amplifier.
I now have a problem related to the driver. With the driver out of the enclosure, I applied a sine wave of 31 Hz. At around 60 watts, the entire cone assembly and spider began to lift upwards, until it was limited by the rubber surround. With a slight increase in power, the driver made very large excursions and additional harmonics. I shut off power at this point. What would cause the Tempest driver to fail in this manner? Can the driver be repaired? Can I repair it? What adjustments need to be made to my subwoofer enclosure to prevent future failures of this manner? Is it tuned too low? Specifically, can the length of the 6" port tube be altered to increase the enclosure's resonance frequency? If so, I would retune the system for a cutoff of around 18 Hz. |
