Audacity is a really powerful tool (for freeware) that you can use to produce some nice stuff to do this with.

NCH has a tone generator that is considerably more simple than audacity but can't do nearly as much. However, it may be just what you need.

EDIT: I had all the cables with me, as most of them came with my Computer speakers. I used a Sound Card stereo jack (3.5mm I think) to 2 RCA (Left/Right) and then 2 RCA cables to go into my AV receiver. It also helped to have a laptop :D I had a USB sound card as well, because I do a bit of oscillator experiments and blowing up my lappy's built in sound is out of the question. But you should be fine just outputting signal from yours.
