I'm looking for a low budget driver to make a couple of small(~30liter) sealed subs for the lounge room. These JBL car sub drivers are on sale for $80AUD at the moment, just wondering if I'm wasting my money. They model pretty well in WINISD. My other option is a pair of peerless XLS drivers, but they are 3 times the price. Any opinions appreciated.
Well I picked a couple of these up, they are a budget driver but seem good for the money. They pass the basic test of running quietly at about 12mm of travel at 30hz outside of an enclosure. I have chemical sensitivities so I'm not allowed to cut ply or mdf due to the glues used, so I will be casting some 30l cabs from concrete, with hardwood baffles.
Hi. I changed my mind, I will be using hardwood now, as I think the concrete will be too difficult to get right. I am considering lining the inside of the cabinet with cement sheet to add mass and stiffen the walls, but I don't know how effective it will be, I am guessing I would be better off with more bracing. I'll post some pics when they are done.
I have a JBL GT3-12 (old version I guess), wish I had a GT4-12 instead as they seem to model much nicer in the smaller enclosure (however the GT3-12 appears to be more capable at lower freq in a really big enclosure).
Think I'll buy a more suitable sub (maybe even the GT4-12) for the everyday sub, and use the GT3 for some experiments perhaps.

I could have sworn I heard somebody mention a USAmps DE-1000. I used to have one of those, the chrome version...great amplifiers. I guess they just wanted to test the 1000 WATTS rating that JBL likes to plaster all over their dust caps?

I have used a plaster mixture to coat the inside of boxes, PVA woodworking glue, water and spakfilla( or any fibre re-inforced bulk plaster) mixed to a thick creamy consistency and spread over the walls, but as you have a chemical sensitivity you may not be able to use this approach
I suggest you first try reading this post on jbl drivers. It has a tool that makes sure you have the most updated driver on your system. It didn't cost me a single cent.
