Wow, I just got back to this post after four years. I see the date of the last post is the day my son was born and the receiver was forgotten. Now, four years later, I dug up this receiver from the garage and will hopefully finish this project.

I repaired a good number of those back in the '70s. IIRC I used 2N6488 power transistors as the originals had a tendency to tear an internal lead when warming up making the device go open. It would come back when it cooled off. The 6488s never came back to haunt me. Digikey still has them for $1.16 in single units.

Download the schematic.
You have Pre-Out and Main-In sockets....replace the links with a 2RCA-2RCA cable and swap left/rights to determine if preamp stage or power amp stage is at fault.
Let me know the answer before you do anything more.

Dave.

Hi Dave,

swapping left and right doesn't change anything: the hum is still coming from the left. Does that mean the problem is in the power amp stage?

Oh, I didn't test with speakers, but with head phones. Would that make a difference?

Yes, you have a crook output stage.
Try swapping C514 and C614 (35V 47uF).
Also try swapping F901 and F902 - fuses can develop internal dry solder joint.

Also did you mention oozing from under capacitors ?.
It is quite normal for larger caps to be glued to the board using 'contact glue'.
In time this can turn choc brown/black and become conductive - best to lift the caps and remove it, but this is likely not the fault cause.

Try this and let me know.

Dave.

Went to the biggest electronics store in Montreal, and they didn't have the right capacitors. Does anyone know of a good online store where I could buy these sort of things?
