I wonder if either version of this vintage ss amplifier could be used to drive quad esl's (original ones) . Does anyone ever tried it ?

Sure, both amps will drive the esl, the originals "harshness" will be revealed by the esl- the mosfet version will be softer but still with far better resolution in the high end. Both amps will happily destroy the esl, as it sounds good You tend to play louder and suddenly the Quads break down. Really carefull with the level, just above a wisper, it will work fine with both amps.

In general I agree with the above comment.
40 watts is MAX for Quad ESLs - especially old ones where the gas discharge tube that is intended to shunt overvoltages (too much power) is toasted. You'd likely be best off with a ~35 watt triode tube amp, imho. Sonic nirvana can be had that way. _-_-bear
