I have a Marantz PM44SE but the right channel now plays much quiter than the left. I've tried swapping speakers, phono connections, balance, source direct, etc but no joy.
Does anyone know what the problem might be and if so how to rectify it? Thanks for all help. Neil |

Sounds like a bad output transistor or more. Check the emitter current limiting resistors also.

How good are you at working with circuitry, the question is phrased as if you're an end user whose just looking for an easy fix (sorry if thats not the case). If so, get it serviced professionally as chances are you'll do more harm than good if you're unfamiliar with amplifier circuitry.
Does the amplifier have a loop for pre-out/power in ? If so, try connecting a CD player or so directly to the power in jacks. This will help identify whether it is the preamp or poweramp stage that is faulty. |

Thanks for both replies
jaycee - you're correct - I am an end user looking for an easy (ish) fix - but I do have some experience with electronics - that'll be a degree that's been almost completely erased from memory by 15 years of paperwork and beer! So - I'd like to give it a go fixing the amp myself - I suspect professional repair would prove uneconomical as it was not expensive in the first place - but if that's the recommended course... There's no pre-out/power in so can't test that. Out of interest - would trying headphones help identify the problem? I've not done it yet as I've lost my converter. Is a fix possible without circuit diagrams? thanks again Neil |

Try the headphones that should let you know if the preamplifier is working or not.

except - most integrated amps run the headphone socket from the power amp, through an attenuator so that really wont tell you much.
before doing anything, you really need a schematic. |
