hi everybody...
i'm planning to build a definitive(i hope) amp for my hi fi system....
in others posts i have allready asked for impressions for the ESP P101 amp...
Now, for you, is better to build the P101 mosfet amp or i should go for bipolar amps?
The P101 affascinates me for it's semplicity, but i don't know if its performance is good as rod says...
please reply with realistic impressions about the P101, and if anyone can suggest me a high performance relatively simple project is welcome...:D
P.S. for bipolar amps i prefer circuits with mj15003/04 on output stage...

thanks

Hi,
the Leach (BJT), AKSA (BJT) and the SKA (FET) get good reports here. Maybe add symasym to the list.

The Krell Klones (BJT ClassA) also have a lot of followers.

I resist adding ESP to the listings.

Keep in mind that the amplifier will cost at most about 20% of the budget, case, transformer, smoothing caps, heatsink and ancilliaries/hardware will absorb the other 80%.

yes i now the costs of building an amp, but:
for the case, i will build my enclosure
for the heatsinks i allready have one im my lab
for the trasformer, i fortunately have a 450VA 40+40V toroidal from a old industrial machine, so it's gratis!!!
i allready have the capacitor bank from my old diyed amp...
then, the costs are only one pcb from Rod(only for the components values).
and the output fets...

Do you think that P101 can surpass or compare the performances of the amp that you have suggested?

The blameless amplifier.. The p3a is an excellent first project though, many similarites to the aksa but in a dislexic way ) with simpler current sources in some respects. I have spent the last few months honing an amplifier based on the blamless and trimodal concept but using different parts and values and have come together with an amplifier eerily lifelike in its reproduction with no perceivable grain, harshness and all musical timbre stays intact..Depends what you want though, coloration in the final stage or more truth to the source..

first
we have had 'the same subject' 100 times before
what amp should I DIY build?

So, I agree with Gordy
Go read some other topic about this.
because otherwise 90% sure, the same posters will say the same thing
once again!
(I can see above it has already started this way)

So, besides those 100 other topics you easily could find in Solid State
....

Reference DIY amplifiers
Here is a list of projects and links compiled by Horus:
This is the list of Reference DIY amplifiers:

*************************************************

- About P3A: it is popular, simple, using oldstyle 'bootstrap' in VAS.
Myself prefers not bootstrap.
Bootstrapping, is a remain from the time when
PNP transistors were very expensive or did not exist.
There was a time when PNP were as exclusive As PNP TUBES !!!!!

Both the bootstrap VAS and the N-Channel Output, in JLH famous amplifiers
as well as in AKSA and some ESP amplifiers, including P3A P3B
are solutions from this Time Way Back, when was lack of PNP
(and if they existed, they weren't anything like COMPLEMENTARY)

Today we can use constant current sources, using even PNP JFETS!
So, as I live today, I use other tools.
Bootstrap is a BIG improvenment, from using only Resistor.
But CCS, Constant Current SOURCE, is an improvement from Boostrap

- Same with Project 101: It is a as simple you can do MOSFET.
It is good, but nothing extra, in idea or in circuit.

- Leach amplifiers:
They have an idea! ( low TIM distortion )
They are miles better,
at least if only looking at circuit ... Build & Listening is another thing,
than 2 ESP amps mentioned. And those 2 ESP are good amplifiers.

Still there are many other on the list ... go read!
