Help! Encoder for DS1802

I've recently built Pedja's DS1802 circuit (http://www.pedjarogic.com/spot/index.html) and I'd like to use a rotary encoder for it. What are the specs that I need?

I'm actually looking at the Grayhill 25LB range, and am a little confused as to which one is suitable...

I'm guessing I need the 2-bit quadrature one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live in the UK so would like to source something locally if possible.

Cheers!

Yep, the 2-bit quadrature one would be the start.
But you then still need to decode the outputs into up and down pulses for the DS1802.
If you also want a display for the volume settings etc. then I would use a microcontroller, since you need one anyway for controlling the display (then also use the serial interface for the DS1802, not the up/down one).

Otherwise you could try to find some decoders like the following:
http://www.lsicsi.com/pdfs/digpot7184.pdf
http://www.lsicsi.com/pdfs/LS7183-LS7184.pdf

Seems that in your case the LS7183 is what you need.

Best regards,

Remco

Thanks for your reply Remco,

I'm not too bothered about an LCD for now...just looking for an easy way to control the DS1802 in a rotary fashion. I'm not too keen on using a microcontroller - if I did then I'd go for the PGA2310 chips.

Is it not possible to get some sort of rotary encoder type device that pulses? Surely its quite a simple mechanism?
