OnSemi MJL21193 & MJL21194 Audio Power Transistors

.
Audio Power Output Transistors:

MJL21193 and MJL21194

or
MJ21193 and MJ21194

My driver stage uses MJE15030 (PNP) and MJE15031 (NPN) which are available in the TO220 case style.

For the output stage, I substituted MJ21193 and MJ21194 which come in the TO3 case style.
The same parts, but with slightly lower Pdiss,
are also available in the TO264 package with part numbers MJL21193 / MJL21194;
these should be easier to mount to a heatsink if that is important to you.

MJL21193, MJL21194
Preferred Device
Silicon Power Transistors
The MJL21193 and MJL21194 utilize Perforated Emitter
technology and
are specifically designed for high power audio output,
disk head positioners and linear applications.

What is your idea of expensive?

Gigapod and XEAGLE.

If you are to build a normal power amplifier
then Output Power Transistors are not a very high % of cost.
Not even when using really top class devices ( which I think we should and can afford ).

In my experience,
The big costs in a Power Amplifier are:
- Chassis
- Transformer + eventually Big Filter electrolytic caps
- Heatsink

If you can put this or that much money,
just to make your amplifier chassis outside look nice, almost perfect,
at the images you will post here at www.diyaudio.com
.. then you can afford to make the output stage have very fine transistors, too.

Anyone that really did count the total cost of a DIY Amplifier
will see that this is true, with a few exceptions, of course.
( For example using recycled chassis from defect old amplifiers
can give you nice amplifiers chassis. )

Hi lineup,

You are right, I agree very much. I was just asking because I want to try a few amplifier prototypes and I am afraid I'll pretty much destroy the power transistors. :bawling:
So I wanted something not too expensive to dest... experiment with.
;)
You mention the MJE15030 and MJE15031 in TO220 package. I can get these for 3 euros / pair. Is that inexpensive or not? Are they any good for experimenting? Better than TIP3055/TIP2955?

Thanks for your input (and patience),
G.

My personal favourites are the following devices:
- MJ15005/MJ15004 - good SOA, good price (3 EUR), for about +/-50V rails it's excellent
- MJL21193/MJL21194 - extremely good SOA, easy to mount, costs 4 EUR. I recommend it for >200W amps.
- 2SC5200/2SA1943 - I'm using it for HIFI applications. Good for <100W amps. Easy to mount, high Ft and linearity, costs 2 EUR.
They are standing all your demands:
- General purpose
- Easy to find, with various suppliers or possibly with equivalences
- Inexpensive
- Modern (will still be around five years from now)

Hi sixtek, thanks for your detailed input.
I can't easily find either the MJL21193/MJL21194 or the 2SC5200/2SA1943, could you suggest a reliable mail-order source here in Europe?
Thanks!
Any MOSFET suggestions along the same lines?

I use to buy them in local shops.
France is very-very far from here, so pointless to give the shops address.
I've never bought anything from international distributor.

Have you got a list of transistors that you can buy from your local electronic distributor? Let's upload a list or give us the homepage of the shop and then we can select the appropriate devices together.

You have to re-read my post.
I was the first to, among several others here afterwards,
recommend MJL21193 / MJL21194
.... are specifically designed for high power audio output,

It is usual that even english people doesn't get main message in posts right.
But we can not go on misquoting and mis the point from posters.
It does not create a good spirit at our forum.

Take a look and read once more carefully, my friend:

MJE15030 / MJE15031 was mentioned only as drivers at my quote of a website.
You know what driver transistors are, don't you???
Those that put current into BASE/GATE of an OUTPUT Power Device.

In this example drivers for MJL21193/MJL21194 in a CLASSE A HIRAGA amplifier.

Hi,
lateral Fets 2sj162/k1058
Vertical Fets irfp240/p9140 <+-50Vdc
BJT 2sa1943/c5200 for <+-60Vdc
or MJL4302/4281
or MJ21193/4 for robust duty

Rapid, RS, Dalbani, Farnell

Thank you for the info, AndrewT.

They have the 2SJ162/2SK1058 (Hitachi) pair at my over-the-counter shop for 13,50 euros.

I guess it will be difficult to find a pair of power mosfets for less than that?

I am still looking for an over-the-counter supplier for the 2SA1943/2SC5200 in Paris.

Another shop in Paris has the IRFP240/9240 for 10,50 euros / pair.

You wrote you can easly get TIP2955/TIP3055 for low price.
That's a good output pair, but only for max. 50W amplifiers.

Ah, all right, so that would be an inexpensive pair to try for a first attempt.

Thank you, sixtek.

My over-the-counter supplier is Selectronic, their website is www.selectronic.fr but navigation on their website is a little bit awkward.
Their transistors are here:

("de puissance" means power).

As of late Ive used
Lat FET's 2SJ162/2SK1058 about 10-12 USD here in the states and MJL4302/MJL4281 about 10 USD---The last ones I got thru Onsemi 5 pairs for 11USD(samples)
Dave;)

Thank you Dave,

I found the 2SJ162/2SK1058 for about $16/pair here in France.
I am going to check if OnSemi extends their sample program to France and how much it costs, thanks for the hint.
