Upgrading the volume pot and ditching the balance part was one mod I did to my friends to cure the noisy pot, but it was not an easy task due to having to make a small daughter board for the new pot.

The best way to get more bass is to attach the PSX. Then you get loads of bass, and it's really punchy without being bloated.

There are no output transformers, I suspect you mean transistors. You can replace these, but don't expect drastic differences. I replaced my friends with MOSFETs and the sound was pretty much indistinguishable from before.

i have got a couple cyrus ones. they can be connected to a psx. all you need is to buy the connector to connect the board to the cable. the other thing you need to do is to cut a hole in the plastic cover.

i would start by replacing the caps. the caps would be pretty old and weak. the decoupling caps too.

i did try playing with the coupling caps and that did bring pretty good results.

you might also want to try to bypass the power lytics with small film caps.
