I am repairing an amplifier and I think a 7912 regulator is bad. What's the difference between the 78 and 79? Radio shack apparently only carries the 7812 so if I have to use a 7912 I suppose I'll have to order it from somewhere else.

7812 = positive bus voltage regulator.
7912 = negative bus voltage regulator.

Hi,
down load the datasheets for each. Lots of useful guidance and circuits as well as the techy jargon.
