cyrus 2

Hi

I have a mission cyrus 2 amp which blew a capacitor last
night.
Do you know what type of capacitor i should get to
replace it as i would love to keep my cyrus.
The numbering on the capacitor seems to be of no use
to the staff at the local maplins.
+ 470 / 50 - T8 EKM
If anyone knows what type of capacitor i should replace with would be great

Hi Tim,
I haven't looked, but 470 / 50 would appear to be 470uF 50V.

But first, find out why the capacitor burst. Can you post a picture?

Hopefully only age is the problem here. They are at least 14 years old now.
Manufactured '84 - '92.
Fingers crossed.

The Cyrus 1 is pretty darn similar. Could you get a rough idea which cap it is by looking here.....

I know this is thread jacking, so feel free to ignore me, but how good are these Cyrus amps, seems the british HiFi press love them.

This is one of the preamp (phono only) psu caps. They usually blew much earlier, because Mission used a not reliable series perhaps. I changed many of them already in the late eighties and early nineties. They also usually break (not necessary explode, but get leaky, loose capacity, and start to "modulate" the voltage...) just by age, not by any other cause. So you may be lucky here, although it is difficult to say without having the item on my desk.

So in any case: Remove the remains (not easy...) and solder in a new cap with the already mentioned values (better would be 470µF / 63V but htese do not fir perhaps). Do not forget the polarity. Then power up the amp (with the power amps fuses removed!) and check the voltages before (at the caps or the diodes) and after the regulators.

very good, even the older ones.
I have a Cyrus Two with PSX. Sounds superb for the second hand price I paid.
Although my line level only Cyrus8 is better, but does not have phono.

Oh, I wish someone would post a Cyrus Two schematic.
