Hi all,
I am looking to upgade from my receiver to separate preamp/amp. I plan
on building some speakers, I haven't decided which yet but will most
likely end up with a simple 2-way design since my listening room is a
little less than 200 sq.ft. and I favor moderate listening volumes. I
have read many posts on this site that recommend this kind of upgrade
as an improvement over typical receiver pre-outs, (in my case Harman
Kardon 3250.) I will be using a pro audio amp for power, Crest VT900, I
have also read convincing arguments that these kind of workhorse amps
make respectable hifi amps too, (and the price is right since I already
own it.)

I listen almost exclusively to CDs, I don't require inputs for tape,
tv, etc. nor do I need surround. My search has revealed that Adcom and Rotel are widely recommended, are there other simpler preamps that will suit my needs given
a budget of $200-300? I am wide open to reliable used gear.

Also, should I be looking for for a preamp with digital in?

Thanks,

gary
