I would like to build a six channel pre-amp for my home theater. My dvd player has built in digital decoding so that is not a requirement. What I would like to do is when using the pre-amp in stereo mode it will drive my F.R,F.L,R.R and R.L speakers but shut off the center speaker. For the sub channel I would like a seprate level control. The only inputs I need are for my T.V. ,DVD player(5.1), and 2 aux stereo inputs. I have four alps 4 gang 50kohm motorized pots I would like to use. This will be my first pre-amp but not my project. Any and all help would be great.

You need some input and output buffers.
And some switches, that can be controlled manually or automatically.
A good choice, judging by many repeatedly, wouldbe some OPA2134 OP amps. This has 2 amps per IC.
Some smaller regulated power supply for them.
Some switches with good contacts or relays.
Maybe some other pots.
The technical details could be worked out, customized for you.
Draw a scheme of how it should work in the different modes.
All things you need is easily to find in shops.

thanks for the reply i'll try to draw something up and post it(then you can tell me if i'm nuts 
). If you could post me some sort of schmatic that I could start with that would be great. I'm not asking anybody to design it for me just for a little help getting started. I have built kits but nothing from scratch.

Most constructions comes out of a need.
A need that someone have, a desire.
To get some good help in reaching fullfillment of that need,
the "helpers" first should know as much as possible of that VISION a person have.
The more details you can provide about that goal you have set,
the better.
I assure, for your preamp, anything can be solved
here at the Forum.
We have some very clever friends here.
Some helpers give people what they do not need.
Maybe to fullfill some needs of themselves?
Maybe out of the thought:
"What is good for me, must be good for everybody else".
A need that someone have, a desire.
To get some good help in reaching fullfillment of that need,
the "helpers" first should know as much as possible of that VISION a person have.
