Here is a weird one

I was given an old "Electrophonic" brand stereo (cheap table top unit with 8 track) that I am using for a beater system in my work room. It has two sliders for the volume (one for each channel). If you turn up just the left channel you get sound. If you turn up just the right channel you get no sound. If you turn both up however you get sound from both sides and - get this - it is stereo. Pretty goofy huh?

This could be a fun detective project given that I have no schematic. Anything obvious that I should check? It is just a beater so I can use it as is but I never want to shy away from a learning experience. :D
