While searching through an electonics kit store, I found quite a deal on a simple solid-state amplifier. It's probbably not amazing, but would it be good enough to use as a subwoofer amplifier? Most plate-amps are much more expensive, but the actual parts cost for a "sonotube" subwoofer is not much at all, and this might be a nice way to make a cheap woofer.

The basic velleman amplifier is good enough for a subwoofer.
I'd upgrade the value of the smoothing capacitors though. |

Out of curiousity, what is the reason that I've yet to see anyone else using one?

Hi Spasticteapot,
Depends on the price of the kit - MCM currently has a 150w RMS @ 4 ohm plate amp available for $49.95, which is hard to beat on price and convenience. -Nikhil |

Given the choice, I'd go the $50 plate amp route every time.
