Could a TO225/Case 77 type transistor such as the BD135-139 types be used as input trannies in a general 50-80V design, or must the wattage remain in the 1W range of TO92 packages?

Input transistors are usually chosen for their electrical performance, not the packaging. If a transistor performs suitably for your design, use it.
You will quite possibly catch some flak for using those particular devices though.

No reason why you couldn't and the amp will work. In almost all cases though the lower noise - higher gain transistors are only available in the smaller packages.
Cheers
