Default pre-amp question many questions

hey,

where is the best place for a volume control? before the gain circuit or after?

wanting to use transformers as voltage gain and mosfets to match impedance's.

throwing in a 1:5 step up somewhere in there.

all transformers have constant secondary loads and primary source impedances.

thinking:

1:1 then source follower mosfet then 1:5 then source follower mosftet then 1:1

where do i put the volume control??

and should i do this as push pull or s.e.?

Thanks!
