Default Comparison between Bipolar transistors and MOSFET as output devices

Good Day,

I would like to know which of the two devices here are the best for being output devices, in an audio power amplifier:

A) Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT);
B) Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET)?

Any comments, agreements or disagreements and personal views are warmly welcomed, please. Comparisons, listing the advantages and disadvantages of the two devices mentioned are lovingly welcomed. Thank you.

i like BJTs simply because PNPs aren't too bad. now Pfets are just big cludgy things for a power amp to have.

I suggest you research the thorough articles by Douglas Self. In a nutshell, proper audio BJTs are more linear. I myself use vertical (switching or IRF type) MOSFETs though because they give fine results and are more rugged.

Hi raveenvijendren,
I agree with richie00boy. I'll add that each technology has it's draw backs. I find bipolar easier to deal with in general. In low feedback or low correction (local feedback mechanism), bipolars seem to sound better. There are good schemes for mosfets too. I know workhorse prefers mosfets (N channel now).

Mostly it's what you want to do with the device and how you put it together. The right tool for the right job.
