I am getting really frustrated. I keep finding references to articles by Douglas Self on preamp designs, but I can't seem to find the articles themselves. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

At least I can point you to his web page:
www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/ampins/ampins.htm However, there is not much info on his pre amps there. It seems though that most or all of the pre amp articles are reprinted in one of his books. |

The book Christer is referring to is 'Self on Audio' published by Newnes. You can read one of the pre-amp articles (the excerpt) at the following URL and can also check the index to see the other Electronics World articles included in the book.

Hi,
I think Self published much of his work in Wireless World later to become Electronics World. They probably hold the copyright which may be why Self does not reprint the articles in his webpages.

Thanks for the info. Andrew, you are probably right about the copyright issue.
Has anyone built any of Self's preamps or does anyone have any schematics for any of them? |

The schematic for his first pre-amp design can be accessed from the link I posted earlier. I have his "Precision preamplifier '96" article. Email me and I will send you a copy.

I guess there will be a lot of these out there somewhere, most built using the purchased pcb. Here's my version of the '96 Pre-Amp that doesn't.

Received the article - thanks Geoff.
I am busy studying Self's "Audio Power Amplifier Design Handbook", which is all discrete circuitry. I expected his preamp designs to be discrete as well. Imagine my surprise when the "Precision Preamp" turns out to be an opamp design - with tone control circuitry. We live and learn. No wonder you prefer JLH's stuff. |
