I see what you mean. That's a strange one alright. I would expect the top transistors to be MJ15023 too.
If you opt to go for the MJ15023, you may encounter some stability problems. Best power up with a light bulb first and check with scope. BTW, some amps with opamp front end cannot be powered up with a variac.
