Sure, why not?

If anything, the SMPS should work better under this condition since the load seen by the PS will be constant.

I like the ultra low noise chips available from Linear Technology, e.g., LT1680, LT1533, etc. See http://www.linear-tech.com/index.jsp. Their app notes are good, and a recommended read. They can be run open loop or closed loop.

Specific problems you'll have to address are magnetics design, radiated noise, and heat dissipation. Pick a switching frequency well above audio range to avoid mechanical and electrical noise in the audio band.

If you intend to run this in an automobile, you'll have to pay more attention to heat management, since space is a premium. Also, you'll need to widen the operating voltages to 8-45 Vdc. Your design should be able to at least survive this, plus maybe reverse polarity.

Regards,

Rob
