Angry Amp to Computer Hummmm

Hi,

Hope I'm in the right section.

I picked up a Luxman amp and connected it to my computer and turntable (I wanted to record my old records to CD). I get a pronounced humm when I turn the amp on.

The hum goes away when I disconnect it from the computer and play a record.

Is this a ground loop??? What can I try to fix this.

Thanks

Ralph

Real common problem. I solved it with high quality isolation
transformers from Jensen Transformer. Alternatively you
can undo the earth grounding on one or more components
to break ground loops (not so highly recommended) or
build a balanced input to your amp (lots of work).

Sounds like the ground wire in your cable between amp and computer is busted. Happened to me once, amp went HUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMM, the sub that is. Also a tape input on my amp is busted, hums when i use that input but not on the other inputs, could be the same thing for you.

Recently a friend of mine asked me to investigate a serious hum with his computer to amp set up. Turned out the cause was the connection to his cable modem. The cure was to place a transformer in the coax line between the modem and the antenna socket.

See here for an example http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/...oopcableTV.php

On my system hum is much reduce just by ensuring that all computer and audio devices are powered from the same wall socket.
