it's best if you buy from a reputable parts distributor such as Newark (farnell's), digikey, or mouser. these distributors buy direct from the manufacturer (On-Semi, Fairchild, and one of them stocks some Toshiba parts). buying from distributors that buy from brokers (Fox, Centerpointe, Tri-Tronics are 3 i know of in the US) is a bad idea. Centerpointe used to buy direct from the manufacturers, but they had a change of ownership in about 1999 or 2000, and have since been buying from brokers, and i have got a few counterfeits from them between 2005 and 2008. 2007 was when i became aware there were counterfeits on the market, and in 2008 i bought a pair of output transistors from Centerpointe that were rather obvious fakes. i tested the parts using junction capacitance tests and found that their junction surface area (directly proportional to the capacitance) to be about 1/4 what it should be, they offered to replace them, but sent me fakes to replace the fakes. i haven't bought from them since.
