Plate amps?

OK< here is your opportunity to snicker at the old guy.

I have been in electronics since the late 1950s, and have earned my living in pro audio for the last 20 years.

But in reading the various posts here, I for the life of me have no idea what a "plate amp" is.

What's a plate amp?

I tried searching, but got page after page of folks talking about them but not defining them.

a plate amp, is simply an amp built onto a plate. Instead of sitting it somewhere, you cut an amp shaped hole in your sub box, and bolt this in place. Then, you've got your sub and amp all in one combo

Great(?) minds think alike. I was just getting ready to expose my ignorance and ask just the same thing. At first I thought it had to do with tubes, since they have plates, but then a plate sub-woofer amp seemed a little too improbable...

Hehe. I was thinking about asking too. Usually Google saves me, but although it comes up with lots of hits for "plate amp", no one seems to want to write down a definition; they just assume everyone knows what they are.
