A friend of mine gave me his HK AVR45. He said it had something wrong with volume control and sometimes it didn't want to turn on.
Well, now is mine, and it works great! I peeled off the screen protective cover, it had been on there for about 6 years I guess. Only problem I've seen in the 3 hours I've had it is that it is missing the bass knob. I have searched all over the internet, but I can't find a schematic. Do you all think I should try to modify this amp? If so what? I'm somewhat of a noob, and definately a noob in the solid state forum. Any suggestions? Thanks, Josh |

I opened the AVR45 up today. The amps has 6 caps that have melted a bit onto the circuit boards.
Can that harm the circuitry? should I replace them with higher quality caps? Thanks, Josh |

any suggestions?
I'm desperate, I want to work on a project without spending a ton of money, and I haven't ventured into solid state yet so I thought a free amp would be a good way to start. Thanks, Josh |

An amp needing service ain't "free."
In any case, there are multiple sources for the manuals. Doing a quick Yahoo search on "AVR 45 service manual" turned up a bunch of hits. The first one was http://www.vintageaudiomanuals.com/-H-.htm . I'd drop them an email. You might also contact HK directly to see if they'll sell you one.

I've found quite a few places to buy sevice manuals, I was trying to find one for free
I emailed HK about one also. The amp seems to work fine, all inputs work, along with all outputs. The only 2 problems are those caps, which the cover has melted, and the balance knob is missing. Do you think I should replace those caps? I recently read the thread about the first amp building experience on the forum and was very interested. I also saw someone say that you can never have too many caps. So should I replace the caps? I thought I gave the values but I guess not. 2 6800uf 50wv negative (m)85degree C, 2 8200uf 63wv negative (m) 85degree C, and 2 Licon 2200uf 35v. I recently built a gainclone and am interested in another project, besides a modification and I thought this mod would be a good intro into solid state Thanks, Josh |
