I am looking into building a powersupply for testing car amps. I need to supply 14.4V but at upto 80-100amps. Do I just use a large 12v Toroid with a lot of capacitance or is there something else I should be considering.

Hi,
instead of large caps try a large lead/acid battery. It will give good DC even with high charging pulses. regards Andrew T. |

If all you want is short (relatively anyway) playtimes a battery (or multiple battery) setup is fine. You still need a charger, and the voltage will be constantly dropping. If you have the $$ and the inclination, a big transformer and monstrous caps will play as long as you please. Either will work.
Post photos when you finish though!
