Default Burn-in Leach amp??

Hi,

I heard a lot about burning in amplifiers but couldn't find anything about why to do it. I understand the speakers but why the amps?

Nowadays I am buying parts to build the Leach amp. Should it be also burned in? If yes, I will buy a couple of 25W resistors as dummy load. What should be the value? Is 8 ohms fine? Thanks,

Murat

Default Hello fellow Tennesseean!

I haven't done a burn-in on a solid state amp before, but I could see that there may be a benefit. I'm hoping someone else here has done this kind of thing before. I'd like to know if it really makes a difference.

I think it would be foolish to deny that electronic components change their characteristics from use over time. As to what degree of burn-in would be required, it would be hard to say. I wouldn't stress the amp too hard as this may shorten the life of the components.

A dummy load would be a good idea. Parts Express carries a few designed for amplifier testing.

I would use music for the source instead of sine waves. I would set the volume to a moderately loud level using speakers first. The peaks should be below clipping. Use a scope to confirm. Then hook up the dummy loads instead of the speakers and let it go. Keep a watchful eye on the temperatures of both the amp and the loads. Check the scope to make sure that no oscillation problems pop up.
