A friend has a Arcam delta 90.2 which is about 15 years old (he thinks) It has recently developed a problem which he explains as follows :-

"Symptom is that it sounds like the base is blown, it starts crackling at any more than background volume"

The problem is only the right channel.

Does anyone hav any info on this amp or any idea what the problem might be and if its fixable?

Thanks.

A bit more info about this amp, the amp is producing sound from both channels, however the right channel is very crackly with very distorted bass.

I got him to take the cover off and he could not see anything obvious, no scorching, no bulging caps no smell of burning....

Any ideas of how to work outs what's wrong?

Hi wytco0,
I don't know this amp specifically, but general troubleshooting may help here. Run an oscillator into the input and watch the level on the output. There may be a capacitor opening up that is causing the distortion at low frequencies. 6 and 10V electrolytics are a good place to look for this.
Another place to look is the solder joints on the heavier components on the PCB. Just resolder them as cracks can be almost invisable.
