It is faily strange looking, but with lots of smaller caps, you get a higher ripple rating and the ESI is reduced.
I think if you go to :

Then find the page that is titled 'Linear Power Supply Design' you will find a much more in-depth explination.

Obviously the downside to this idea is the hassle of mounting 50 or so caps! this guy has bothered to excel in this respect.

Ah, i have just seen the other pic with the batts.

Erm, Right, yes, Interesting is one observation

is it ok to put caps on top of toriods like that? wouldn't you get loads of noise?
